Transforming education in the Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands national assessment data from 2017 shows 69% of students at or above the expected level for literacy and 71% for numeracy, but results vary significantly across provinces and school types. And while primary education enrollment is high, fewer students participate in lower secondary, and most leave school before senior secondary.

The government is working with GPE and other partners to establish foundations for improved quality teaching and learning with gender equality and inclusion.

The Solomon Islands Partnership Compact presents a roadmap to ensure all children have the opportunity to complete a relevant education that builds life skills. Components of the reform include better teacher management by improving data, recruitment, performance monitoring and career pathways.

Training aims to equip teachers with effective literacy, numeracy and learner-centered teaching strategies, and support them to use assessments for learning. Updated teaching and learning materials will strengthen implementation of the new curriculum.

An emphasis on inclusive education is expected to generate new data on gender and disability to inform policy planning and implementation.
