GPE joins nearly 50 organizations and countries that have signed up to the Commitment to Action on Foundational Learning, launched last year at the UN Transforming Education Summit.
Foundational learning means the basic reading, math and socio-emotional skills that children should acquire in preschool and in the early grades of primary school.
It is estimated that 7 out of 10 children in low- and middle-income countries cannot read a simple text by age 10, making their education progress close to impossible and hindering their future opportunities.
GPE’s strategy (GPE 2025) highlights the importance of learning at each stage of a child’s education, including early learning and the wide range of skills needed to succeed in the 21st century.
GPE supports partner countries’ priorities to transform their education systems, including through improving learning. In this way, the partnership serves as a delivery mechanism at country level for the engagement enshrined in the Commitment to Action.
