Education in Djibouti

Djibouti has improved education access, retention and the quality of the teaching and learning process. But achieving quality education for all requires addressing inequalities which negatively impact access to education for children in rural areas, girls, children with disabilities, and nomadic and refugee children.

The government is working with GPE and other partners to ensure completion of basic education and transition to secondary education for girls and boys from all regions of the country.

Djibouti’s Partnership Compact marks the country’s commitment to transform education by reducing disparities in favor of an inclusive and equitable education. Plans to improve learning conditions focus on school infrastructure, mobilizing resources for families, students and teachers to overcome vulnerabilities, and helping youth develop life skills.

A focus on improving learning for vulnerable children aims to increase the number of teachers in rural areas and equip teachers with the skills to address students’ learning difficulties.

A key ambition of the priority reform is to decentralize education system management by empowering regional and municipal authorities to respond to needs at the local level.
